The Burden of Playing God – Daily Devotional for July 16

The Burden of Playing God daily devotional for July 16

Many people feel exhausted by the burdens of life. In today’s Daily Devotional for July 16, The Burden of Playing God, we explore why trying to “manage” our own existence is the heaviest weight we can carry.

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28)

The Cost of Self-Reliance

When Jesus speaks of being “weary and burdened,” He is describing more than just physical fatigue; He is speaking of an existential exhaustion (Matthew 11:28-30).

We are burdened because we are attempting to carry the weight of our lives entirely on our own. We try to orchestrate every outcome, solve every problem, and prove our worth to the world through our own effort. Essentially, we are trying to take God’s place, attempting to act as the all-powerful rulers of our own tiny universes.

This is an unbearable burden that no human was designed to carry. Every person who feels crushed by the weight of life today is likely someone who has taken on a responsibility that was never meant for them, the responsibility of being their own savior.

When we step down from the throne of our own ego and accept that we are creatures rather than creators, we finally create the space to receive true rest. Jesus invites us not just to stop working, but to stop trying to be God. That is where the relief begins.

Prayer for Today

Lord, I am tired of trying to be the ruler of my own life. I see now that my exhaustion comes from the constant, desperate attempt to manage the world around me and prove my own worth. Forgive me for taking on a burden that belongs to You. Today, I humbly surrender the need to control every outcome. Help me to lay down my heavy burdens at Your feet and learn what it means to truly rest in Your care, trusting that You are the only One capable of carrying it all. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

To You

What is one specific situation today that you are trying to “solve” or control with all your might? Can you try to do your part and then, as an act of faith, hand the result over to God, intentionally releasing the burden of the outcome?
