Lenten Devotional – Day 31: Control Less

Lenten Devotional - Day 31: Control Less

Letting go of control doesn’t mean not caring. It means recognizing that trying to manage every detail of life, especially the actions and emotions of others, is both exhausting and counterproductive. Attempting to control others often reflects a lack of adequate self-control, inner discipline, and emotional autonomy.

Lenten Devotional – Day 31

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.” (Proverbs 3:5-6)

Control Less

Trying to control others is often a misguided attempt to feel safe or powerful. It arises from fear, insecurity, or a desire to protect ourselves from pain. However, this approach often backfires, causing resentment, strained relationships, and spiritual stagnation.

When we try to control others, we are essentially trying to play God. But true strength and peace come from learning to master ourselves. It requires humility, patience, and reliance on God’s guidance.

Recognize the Problem

Reflect today: Do you find yourself constantly trying to influence, manage, or manipulate the actions of others? Is your peace dependent on how others behave or respond to you? Recognizing your need to control is the first step toward releasing it and embracing spiritual growth.

When we struggle with control, it often reveals a deeper issue—our own lack of self-control and emotional stability. Instead of exerting power over others, God calls us to develop inner discipline, patience, and faith.

Practical Steps

Begin today by acknowledging areas where your desire for control has caused strain or conflict. Bring these situations before God, asking Him to help you trust Him more fully and develop genuine self-discipline.

Practice surrendering your need for control by trusting God with the people and circumstances in your life. Remind yourself that God is ultimately in control, and your role is to live faithfully and responsibly, not to manipulate outcomes.

“Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” (1 Peter 5:6-7)

My brother, releasing the desire to control others allows you to experience greater peace, freedom, and spiritual growth.

Daily Actions and Tips:

  • Identify situations where you need to control others and write them down.
  • Pray daily, asking God to help you release your desire for control and develop inner discipline.
  • Choose Bible verses that emphasize surrender, trust, and faith to meditate on regularly.
  • Practice humility by allowing others to make their own choices without interference or manipulation.

Prayer for Today

Heavenly Father, today I acknowledge my struggle with control. Forgive me for trying to manage others instead of trusting You. Teach me to release my desire for control and develop inner discipline and faith. Help me to trust Your wisdom and timing, knowing that You are ultimately in control. Guide me toward peace, humility, and spiritual growth. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
