Fulfilling God’s law. Imagine the absurdity of some pathetic Pharisees accusing Jesus, God incarnate, of blasphemy and ignoring God’s commandments. Yes, it is ridiculous to us. But, it was not funny to Jesus because this situation ended in his death.
Lent Daily Devotional
Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. (full text at Matthew 5:17-19)
Fulfilling God’s Law
This Scripture gives us the key to understanding the Bible. Everything written in the Bible in the Old Testament refers to Jesus as the Messiah.

All the law that the Pharisees accused Jesus of is for the Israelites. It contains all the rules of life, faith, and morals for the Chosen People. Their mission is to create a religious and cultural environment where the Messiah sent by God could be born.
Therefore, when Jesus says that he has come to fulfill the law, everything written in the Old Testament about the Messiah will become a reality with Jesus.
Jesus fulfilled God’s Law
He is the only one who fulfilled the whole law.
The Pharisees never understood who Jesus was until the very last moment.
What was Old is Gone
Therefore, we must point out a few important things to us. For example, the temple’s religious system of burnt, blood offerings, and animal sacrifices had a temporary but critical function.
Until the Messiah had washed away the people’s sins by His sacrifice on the cross and by His blood, the sacrifices in the temple had to be offered.
Therefore, we must accept Jesus into our lives as the Messiah sent by God. To accept his death on the cross as the sacrifice of an innocent lamb for our sins.
We must also remember that righteousness is when we surrender to God’s will with complete trust.
Prayer for Today
Heavenly Father, I adore You and exalt Your name. You have revealed all the secrets of holy living. Therefore, help me follow Your Word daily and trust You completely. I ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
