The season of Lent is a time for reflection, sacrifice, and spiritual growth. As we engage in fasting, we are reminded to turn our attention away from the worldly pleasures that distract us and towards the divine. But, as Jesus warns us in Matthew 6:16-18, we must be mindful of our intentions and actions when fasting. Fast for God, not to make an image for yourself in the eyes of others.
Devotional 29th day of Lent
“When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting.” (Bible verse at Matthew 6:16-18)
It’s not enough to simply fast, to deny ourselves food or other indulgences. We must fast with humility and sincerity, not seeking to impress others with our piety or gain their approval. We must fast in secret, not seeking recognition or reward from others but rather from our heavenly Father.
This is not to say fasting should be a joyless or sad experience. On the contrary, we are called to put oil on our heads, wash our faces, and present ourselves with joy and optimism. Fasting should be a time of spiritual renewal to focus on God’s blessings and express gratitude for those blessings.

So, as we embark on this Lenten journey, let us do so with a humble heart and a joyful spirit. Let us fast not to impress others or to gain their favor but to deepen our connection with God and strengthen our faith. So may we be rewarded not with earthly recognition but with the abundant grace and love of our Heavenly Father.
