My brother, what began in the twentieth century as an idea of cultivating personal leadership has degenerated in the twenty-first century into the most primitive popularization of selfishness. The Freedom of Letting Go – Daily Devotional for August 7
“Then Jesus said to his disciples, ‘Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.’” (Matthew 16:24)
Liberation from the Ultimate Tyrant
When we first hear Jesus say “let him deny himself,” it can easily frighten us (Matthew 16:24–28). It sounds as though He is demanding voluntary self-destruction, crushing our individuality, or exercising cruel coercion over our spirits.
Yet, only a few people truly grasp what Jesus is talking about here.
He is not calling us to self-hatred; He is talking about liberation from our greatest and most exhausting tyrant – our own egoism, narcissism, and constant anxiety about our status. A person who lives entirely to defend their “self,” to constantly prove their worth, assert their rights, and control every outcome, is not truly free. They are locked inside a solitary prison of their own making.
To deny oneself simply means to step down from the exhausting throne of being the center of the universe and to allow God to dwell in that rightful center instead. It is an invitation to walk out of the prison of self-absorption and into complete inner freedom.

Prayer for Today
Lord, I confess how easily I fall into the trap of self-protection, constantly defending my rights, my ego, and my status. When I hear Your call to deny myself, I am often afraid of what I might lose. Forgive my stubborn pride. Help me to see that letting go of my ego is not destruction, but the doorway to true freedom. Take the center of my life today, and teach me the joy of following You without constantly looking out for myself. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
