We all should keep our word. Let your Yes be Yes. Today, in our Daily Devotional for June 15, let’s reflect on the importance of integrity and trustworthiness in our commitments.
Daily Devotional for June 15
“All you need to say is simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything beyond this comes from the evil one.” – Matthew 5:37 (NIV)
Let Your Yes Be Yes
In today’s world, it’s common for people to make promises and break them easily if a minor problem arises or something more appealing comes along.
However, as followers of Christ, our “yes” should mean “yes,” and our “no” should mean “no.” This principle is foundational to living a life of integrity and trustworthiness.
Integrity in Commitments
It’s essential to recognize that there may be times when we genuinely cannot fulfill a commitment. However, this should be the exception, not the norm.
Many people no longer view agreements as binding in business and personal matters. The high divorce rate, for instance, indicates that many view marriage as a casual union that can quickly be abandoned.
As Christians, we are called to a higher standard. When we make a promise or a commitment, we should do everything in our power to keep it.
Building Trust
When you consistently honor your word, you build a reputation for being trustworthy. People will know that you are a person of integrity who consistently speaks the truth.
This credibility can open doors for sharing the truth about God’s Kingdom. People are more likely to listen to you if they see that you live out your faith in practical, everyday ways.
Being trustworthy also means speaking the truth in love. Ephesians 4:15 and 25 remind us that we should always strive to talk about the truth to one another, building each other up in love and integrity.
Challenges to Keeping Your Word
There will be times when keeping your word is challenging. Unexpected events, emergencies, or unforeseen circumstances may arise. In these moments, communicate openly and honestly with those affected. Explain the situation and seek their understanding.
Transparency in such situations further builds your integrity.
Living a life where your “yes” means “yes” and your “no” means “no” aligns you with God’s desire for His people. It sets you apart as someone who can be trusted, someone whose word carries weight.

Prayer for Today
Heavenly Father, thank You for Your faithfulness and integrity. Please help us reflect on these qualities in our own lives. Teach us to be people of our word, whose “yes” means “yes” and “no” means “no.” Please give us the strength to honor our commitments and the wisdom to communicate openly when we face challenges. May our integrity bring glory to Your name and open doors for sharing Your truth. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
