Today, in our Daily Devotional for June 18, let’s explore the importance of focusing on our life position in Christ rather than our ever-changing emotions, life position over feelings.
Daily Devotional for June 18
“Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.” – Colossians 3:2 (NIV)
Life Position Over Feelings
Feelings are ever-changing, often shifting without notice or reason. We all experience a wide range of emotions—good or bad, happy or sad, excited or discouraged, peaceful or anxious. Emotions can be fickle and unreliable, yet they often dominate our conversations and influence our decisions.
It is natural to express how we feel, but focusing too much on our negative emotions can amplify them.
We frequently talk more about our negative feelings than our positive ones. For instance, if I wake up tired and discouraged, I might feel compelled to share it with everyone I meet. Conversely, I might not even mention it if I wake up feeling energetic and excited.
The Impact of Talking About Feelings
Talking about how we feel can intensify those feelings. Therefore, we should be mindful of our words. Discussing positive feelings can uplift our spirits while dwelling on negative ones can drag us down.
This does not mean we should ignore our negative emotions, but rather, we should approach them constructively.
When negative feelings persist, seeking prayer or advice is beneficial. However, simply talking about negative emotions without seeking solutions is unproductive. Instead, we can acknowledge how we feel and speak words of faith. For example, if you feel tired, you might say, “I feel tired, but I believe God will energize me.”
Focusing on Our Life Position
The most important thing is not our fluctuating feelings but our steadfast position in life, which is rooted in Christ and remains unchanged regardless of how we feel.
As Christians, our identity and worth are secure in God’s promises and love. Colossians 3:2 reminds us to set our minds on things above, not on earthly things.
Our feelings may change, but our position as God’s beloved children does not. This eternal truth should guide our thoughts and actions. By focusing on our life position over our feelings, we align ourselves with God’s perspective and draw strength from His unchanging nature.
