“‘Martha, Martha,’ the Lord answered, ‘you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or actually only one.’” (Luke 10:41–42)

The Trap of Performance

When life becomes overwhelmed by unexpected difficulties, and we can no longer keep up with our self-imposed “spiritual duties,” a quiet panic sets in. We begin to feel as though we have deeply disappointed God, failed our highest ideals, and let our lives slip into a gray, joyless patch. We treat grace like a ledger that we are constantly failing to balance.

It is worth noting that Jesus did not rebuke Martha for preparing food or engaging in hospitality; rather, He gently corrected her because she was “anxious and troubled about many things,” weighed down by inner tension and irritability toward those around her. Martha had clearly lost her inner balance. She was working out of anxiety rather than love (Luke 10:38–42).

When we view God through the lens of performance, service becomes a burden that drains our soul. Jesus invites us to step away from the frantic treadmill of our own making, put down the heavy ledger of our achievements, and remember that our worth is found simply in sitting at His feet.

Prayer for Today

Lord, I confess that I often measure my spiritual standing by how much I accomplish and how well I keep up with my duties. When I fall short, I feel distant from You and consumed by anxiety. Forgive me for turning Your grace into a performance trap. Help me to release my inner tension, quiet my irritability, and let go of the need to prove my worth through relentless effort. Draw me back to the one thing that is truly needed: resting in Your presence. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

To You

Where are you currently running on empty because you are trying to earn your worth or manage your spiritual life through sheer effort? Can you step back today and simply rest in His grace for a few moments?
