“A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.” (Matthew 12:39)
The Game of the Ego
Why did the Pharisees ask Jesus for a sign when they had already witnessed His incredible works? They did not ask because they lacked evidence; they asked because they refused to change their mindset. They had built a comfortable, secure place in the religious world, and acknowledging Jesus meant tearing down their carefully constructed status.
Demanding an “impressive miracle” is often our ego’s clever way of avoiding personal responsibility. We negotiate with God, saying, “I will believe and change, but only if You give me the exact sign I am looking for on my terms.”
This attitude isn’t a search for truth; it is a defense mechanism. Jesus refuses to play this game. God does not provide theatrical special effects just to satisfy our curiosity or stubborn pride. He has already given us the ultimate sign in the resurrection of Christ and the quiet, persistent presence of His Spirit.
When we stop demanding that God prove Himself according to our criteria, we open our eyes to the grace He is already offering right in front of us.

Prayer for Today
Lord, forgive me for the times I have demanded a sign from You as a condition for my trust. I confess that my desire for dramatic proof is often just a mask for my unwillingness to change my own heart or step out of my comfort zone. Help me to stop negotiating with You and playing games with my faith. Grant me the humility to accept the grace You have already given, and give me the courage to follow You without needing a spectacle to convince me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
