The Courage to Touch the Hem Daily Devotional for July 6

We often feel small, invisible, or unworthy in the middle of life’s chaotic “crowds.” We worry that our needs are too insignificant or our problems too shameful to bring into the light. In today’s Daily Devotional for July 6, The Courage to Touch the Hem, we look at how a single moment of desperate faith can change everything.

“She said to herself, ‘If I only touch his cloak, I will be healed.’” (Matthew 9:21)

The Power of a Private Faith

The woman in this Gospel passage had suffered for twelve years (Matthew 9:20-22). She was likely overlooked, marginalized, and exhausted by the noise of the world pressing in on all sides. Yet, she possessed a quiet, fierce determination. She did not need a public miracle or a grand pronouncement; she only needed to touch the edge of His garment.

This story reminds us that our faith does not have to be loud to be effective.

Sometimes, the most significant “order” we can bring to our lives is simply the decision to stop letting the crowd dictate our worth and instead make our way to Jesus.

This woman was technically an outsider, but her act of reaching out shattered all the rules of social distance and religious etiquette. She understood that Jesus was not just a teacher, but a source of life.

When we finally stop trying to manage our own “emergency” and reach out to Him with honesty, we find that His power is already available to us. True healing begins when we stop worrying about what the world thinks and focus entirely on the Savior.

Prayer for Today

Lord, I often feel lost in the crowd, worried that my struggles are too small or my efforts too weak to be noticed. Forgive me for the times I have kept my distance, fearing that I am not worthy of Your attention. Like the woman in the Gospel, I want to reach out to You today, not for others’ approval, but for the healing only You can provide. Quiet the noise in my life and help me to touch the hem of Your presence, trusting that You are willing and able to make me whole. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

To You

What is one area of your life where you feel like you are “suffering in silence”? Can you take a moment today to stop looking at the crowd and instead reach out to Jesus in prayer, trusting that He is already near?
