Lenten Devotional – Day 9: The Sin of Pride

Lenten Devotional day 9: The Sin of Pride

Of all the sins that hinder spiritual growth and intimacy with God, the sin of pride stands at the top of the list. Why is pride so dangerous? Because it subtly convinces us we don’t need God or others—that we’re self-sufficient, superior, and justified in our own eyes.

Lenten Devotional – Day 9

“Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.” (Proverbs 16:18)

The Sin of Pride

Pride often disguises itself as confidence or self-esteem, but beneath its attractive facade is arrogance, stubbornness, and a hardened heart. Pride prevents genuine connection, true repentance, and authentic growth in God.

The sin of pride always closes doors. It closes the door to meaningful relationships with others and, most tragically, shuts the door to a deep, personal connection with God.

Therefore, the bitter fruit of pride is often loneliness and isolation, leaving us spiritually empty and emotionally distant.

Recognizing Pride Within

Today, let’s carefully consider signs of pride in our lives. Pride can manifest as a refusal to admit mistakes, an inability to apologize, an unwillingness to seek or accept help, excessive criticism of others, or a relentless desire for recognition.

Ask yourself honestly: Do you see any of these traits in yourself? Pride blinds us, preventing the humility needed to experience God’s grace fully. Acknowledging its presence in your heart is the critical first step toward freedom and spiritual renewal.

Steps Toward Humility and Freedom

Confront pride intentionally today. “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.” (James 4:6)

Begin with sincere prayer, acknowledging any prideful attitudes you’ve discovered. Humble yourself before God, asking for His forgiveness and the strength to cultivate genuine humility.

Choose humility actively by practicing gratitude, openly admitting your mistakes, and generously affirming others. Remember, humility isn’t weakness; it’s the doorway to deeper relationships, profound spiritual insight, and a closer walk with God.

My brother, during this Lent season, let humility replace pride, bringing you genuine freedom, joy, and abundant grace.

Daily Actions and Tips:

  • Take quiet time today to honestly reflect on ways pride may be influencing your relationships or decisions.
  • Write down at least one specific area where pride is evident, and confess it openly to God in prayer.
  • Choose a practical act of humility today: apologize sincerely, acknowledge someone else’s strengths, or serve someone without seeking recognition.
  • Pray daily and ask God to heal your hardened heart.

Prayer for Today

Lord Jesus, today I confront the sin of pride that subtly steals my heart away from You. Forgive my arrogance, stubbornness, and self-reliance. Grant me genuine humility and a spirit willing to acknowledge my need for You and others. Help me embrace humility not as weakness but as true spiritual strength. May Your grace shape my heart and actions, drawing me nearer to You and closer to those around me. In Your mighty name, Amen.
