We often struggle with the idea of forgiveness, fearing that it means overlooking wrongs or letting others off the hook. In today’s Daily Devotional for June 18, “The Open Door of the Heart,” we look at how forgiveness is a necessity for our own spiritual life.
The Open Door of the Heart – Daily Devotional for June 18
“For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.” (Matthew 6:14–15)
The Anatomy of a Forgiving Soul
It can feel as though God is setting conditions or negotiating with us in this passage, but it is really about the state of our own souls. Imagine your heart as a vessel. God’s grace and forgiveness are infinite, waiting to fill you, but if that vessel is already clogged with resentment, anger, and a burning desire for revenge, there is no space left for His love to take hold. Our own stubbornness acts like a lock on the door of our hearts. When we choose to forgive, we are the ones who turn the key.
It is vital to remember that forgiveness does not mean pretending that a wrong never happened or condoning evil. We must act on two levels: we forgive internally by letting go of the desire for revenge, and we stand against injustice externally to stop its spread. You can be courageous in opposing what is wrong without letting hatred destroy your own heart. Forgiveness is the bridge that connects us to both God and others; when we refuse to build that bridge to our neighbor, we inevitably cut ourselves off from the flow of grace coming from above.

Prayer for Today
Lord, I realize that my own bitterness has often kept me from experiencing the fullness of Your love. Forgive me for the ways I have held onto anger, thinking it was a form of justice. Help me to open my heart today. Give me the strength to let go of the need for revenge while still having the wisdom to stand for what is right. Let my life be a bridge, not a wall. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
To You
Is there a person or a memory that you have been holding onto with resentment? Today, try the conscious act of releasing the desire for them to “pay” for that wrong, and instead, ask God to fill that space in your heart with His peace.
