So, what is the kingdom like according to this parable? Today, in our Daily Devotional for June 16, let’s explore the power of humble beginnings in God’s kingdom and how even the smallest start can lead to great outcomes.
Daily Devotional for June 16
“He told them another parable: ‘The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his field. Though it is the smallest of all seeds, yet when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds come and perch in its branches.'” – Matthew 13:31-32 (NIV)
The Power of Humble Beginnings
The first thing we learn from the parable of the mustard seed is that God’s kingdom starts small.
Given God’s greatness, this might seem strange to us. It likely seemed strange to the disciples, too. Here was Jesus proclaiming the arrival of the kingdom of heaven.
They must have expected something grandiose, yet they saw only a small group of unschooled fishermen traveling and teaching with Jesus. Compared to the vast power of Rome, they must have felt insignificant.
God’s Plan for Growth
God’s kingdom starts small because He is not interested in flash or show. He is interested in changing hearts and lives one person at a time.
God doesn’t seek out the brightest and best, but He seeks out sinners who know they need a Savior. The power of humble beginnings lies in God’s gradual, transformative work in each of us.
Recently, there has been a trend toward spiritual movements that promise immediate, impressive results through meditation and the power of the Universe. Even some Christians fall into the trap of treating God like a wizard who fulfills wishes on demand.
However, this is a misinterpretation of our relationship with God.
The Example of the Disciples
Paul reminded the Corinthians of their humble beginnings: “Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong” (1 Corinthians 1:26-27).
Jesus also reassured His disciples, calling them His “little flock” and affirming that their Father had been pleased to give them the kingdom (Luke 12:32).
God’s Kingdom Grows
God’s kingdom may seem unimpressive initially, but that’s only because it doesn’t come all at once. It grows from humble beginnings.
God’s kingdom expands and flourishes over time, like a mustard seed growing into a large tree. This is the power of humble beginnings: small, faithful acts can lead to significant, transformative outcomes.
When we look at the church today, it may seem small or unimpressive to some. However, God’s work happens in ways we might not always see. He uses humble beginnings to accomplish great things.
