Resting with God – Daily Devotional for July 21

Resting with God daily Devotional for July 21

Prayer is like a 5-minute vacation. In Mark 6:30-34, Jesus and His disciples withdraw to a remote place for prayer and rest. Today, in our Daily Devotional for July 21, let’s explore the importance of resting with God.

“Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, ‘Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.'” – Mark 6:31 (NIV)

Resting with God

Throughout the ages, Christians have withdrawn from their daily routines to engage in the most important activity—living more consciously in the presence of the Lord.

Some authors of Christian spirituality call this the “sacrament of the present.” The idea is clear: you will meet the Lord here and now, especially when you “calm down” and are receptive.

The Invitation to Rest

In Mark 6:30-34, Jesus invites His disciples to go with Him to a deserted place and rest a while.

This invitation is not just for the disciples but for all of us. It reminds us that we are loved and precious in God’s eyes. Whether we are good or not so good, receptive or less so, everyone can experience God’s presence and action in our lives.

The Merciful Shepherd

Along with resting in the Lord, Jesus is portrayed as the merciful shepherd who provides help to His people, who are like “sheep without a shepherd.”

Under God’s care, there is order, but without a shepherd, there is chaos. This idea has been the foundation for contemplative prayer for centuries—resting in the company of the Lord and letting Him lead.

Miraculous Rest

In Mark 6, Jesus sends the disciples out to work, and when they return, He invites them to rest.

This time of seclusion leads to the miraculous multiplication of bread. This miracle echoes the Old Testament scenario of “Manna in the desert,” where an unlikely situation becomes a reality.

Christ is the source of our peace, a peace that surpasses human understanding and is rooted in God’s presence.

Experiencing God’s Peace

The peace that Christ gives is not merely the absence of conflict or the presence of prosperity, happiness, or good feelings. The peace of Christ comes through the Holy Spirit, rooted in the awareness that God is HERE.

It is a beacon of eternal light guiding us toward salvation. All are invited and welcome to experience this peace.

Prayer for Today

Heavenly Father, thank You for inviting us to rest in Your presence. Help us to withdraw from our daily busyness and spend time with You. Teach us to be still and receptive, to experience Your peace and guidance. As we rest in You, fill us with Your Holy Spirit, reminding us of Your constant presence and love. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

To You

How can you incorporate moments of rest with God into your daily life? Are there times when you can withdraw to a quiet place and spend time in prayer and contemplation?

As you go through today, remember the invitation to rest with God. Let His presence fill you with peace and guide you in all you do. Amen.
