Following Jesus isn’t always easy. He invites us to a life that challenges the norms of society, which can sometimes lead to rejection or alienation. Today, in our Daily Devotional for May 5, let’s reflect on the teachings of Jesus in John 15:18-21 and how they guide us to stand firm in our faith and stand firm for God, even in the face of adversity.
Daily Devotional for May 5
“If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first.” (John 15:18)
Following Jesus in a Challenging World
Jesus tells His disciples that they don’t belong to this world. He has chosen them to follow His path, which often means standing against the societal currents of the time.
The hatred directed towards disciples stems from the contrast between their values and the values of the world. Jesus’ message challenges the status quo, confronts sin, and calls for repentance and transformation. Naturally, this clashes with the world’s desires, leading to hostility and persecution.
This journey requires more than just lip service; it demands courage and conviction. If you choose to follow Jesus, you might face rejection and hate, just as He did.
Don’t Be Afraid to Swim Against the Current
Being a follower of Christ sometimes requires you to go against popular opinion and societal norms. You may have to make difficult decisions, and some people might not understand or support you.
Are you ready to be countercultural for the sake of Christ?
In today’s society, Jesus’ words remain as relevant as ever. While the forms of persecution may vary, Christians around the world continue to face opposition, discrimination, and even violence because of their faith. The hostility towards believers persists from social ostracism to legal restrictions and physical harm.
Stand Firm for God
Amid the chaos of societal pressures and shifting ideologies, Jesus calls us to be the “salt of the earth.” In every moment, you have the choice to follow the crowd or follow Jesus.
This means upholding love and kindness, even when it’s challenging. Stand firm in your faith and trust that Jesus will give you the grace and strength to stay faithful to Him.
As followers of Christ today, we are called to embrace the reality of persecution while remaining steadfast in our faith. Rather than being discouraged by the world’s hatred, we are reminded to rejoice, knowing that we are identified with Christ and share in his sufferings.
