In today’s Daily devotional for September 6, The True Meaning of the Sabbath, Gospel reading Luke 6:1-5, Jesus and His disciples walk through a grain field on the Sabbath. Hungry, the disciples pluck some heads of grain and eat them. The Pharisees see this and accuse them of breaking the law. Jesus responds by reminding them of King David, who once ate the consecrated bread reserved only for priests.
His message is clear: compassion and human need are greater than rigid traditions.
Daily Devotional for September 6
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28)
The True Meaning of the Sabbath
God gave the Sabbath not as a burden but as a blessing. It was meant to be a day of rest, renewal, and restored fellowship with Him.
Yet over time, endless rules and prohibitions turned it into something heavy and joyless. Instead of protecting the gift, the Pharisees distorted it with human-made traditions that missed the point entirely.
Jesus came to restore its true meaning: the Sabbath is about life, compassion, and love.
Truth Over Traditions
Faith, when reduced to empty rules and customs, becomes lifeless. The Pharisees saw only the act of plucking grain, not the hunger of the disciples. How often do we fall into the same trap—focusing on appearances while missing the heart of God’s Word?
Jesus reminds us that He is the Lord of the Sabbath, the very Truth itself, and His desire is not empty ritual but love lived out in action.
Faith That Gives Freedom
True faith should give you wings. It should liberate us, not restrict us. It should be a source of love and joy, not of fear.
So today, Jesus invites us to freedom—freedom from fear and rules that steal our joy. He invites us to live by the true spirit of God’s Word: love and compassion. Only then can we recognize a hungry person and give them to eat, instead of debating whether it is lawful or not.
True freedom is not freedom from God. It is the freedom to become like Jesus.

Prayer for Today
Lord Jesus, thank You for reminding me that faith is not about burdensome rules but about love, compassion, and freedom in You. Teach me to see people’s needs with Your eyes and to live by the true spirit of God’s Word. May my faith bring rest, joy, and life, not only to myself but also to those around me. Amen.
To You
My brother, if you find faith difficult and feel it’s a burden, there is a high probability that you are doing something wrong. Faith should not be a heavy burden. True faith should give you wings.
