Today, in our Daily Devotional for May 9, The Diplomat’s Dilemma, we consider a question of identity: to whom do we truly belong when we are far from home?
The Diplomat’s Dilemma – Daily Devotional for May 9
“If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world.” (John 15:19)
The Role of the Ambassador
Jesus states clearly: “You are not of this world”. To understand our role as Christians, we can look at the life of an ambassador working in a foreign country.
An ambassador lives in a foreign land and speaks the local language. They eat the local food and obey the laws of that country. However, their heart, loyalty, and ultimate allegiance belong firmly to their native country.
An ambassador is a resident, but never a permanent citizen of the land where they work. They are there on a mission, representing the interests and the character of the one who sent them.
Living in the Tension
We live in the world, which means we carry out the normal, necessary duties of life. We take care of our families, we work our jobs, and we pay our taxes. We are not called to retreat into isolation or to ignore the needs of our community.
The difference lies in our “constitution”. The “spirit of the world” is often written in the ink of selfishness, the desire for power, or the empty promises of consumerism. But as citizens of heaven, our guiding document is the Gospel. We answer to a higher authority. When the world tells us to grab, our constitution tells us to give. When the world tells us to climb over others, our constitution tells us to serve. Our identity is defined by the Kingdom we represent, not the culture we inhabit.

Prayer for Today
Heavenly Father, thank You for the privilege of being Your ambassador. Help me to be a faithful resident of this world while keeping my heart anchored in Your kingdom. Give me the wisdom to follow the constitution of the Gospel in every decision I make today. Let my life reflect the beauty and the values of my true home. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
To You
Look at your schedule for today. Where can you act more like a citizen of heaven than a citizen of the world? Choose one moment where you can replace a selfish impulse with an act of service or choose contentment over consumerism.
