Today, in our Daily Devotional for May 8, From Duty to Delight, we witness a divine “promotion” that changes the very nature of our relationship with the Creator, shifting our status from employees to confidants.
From Duty to Delight – Daily Devotional for May 8
“My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” (John 15:12, 13)
The Promotion to Friendship
In the ancient world, the relationship between a master and a servant was strictly professional. A servant did what they were told without needing to understand the “why” behind the order. But Jesus shatters this hierarchy. He tells His followers that He no longer calls them servants, but friends.
This is a massive promotion. To be a “friend” of the King means you are in on the plan. You are trusted with the heart of the Master, not just His instructions. This changes our motivation for obedience. We don’t follow Him because we are afraid of a “performance review” or cosmic HR: we follow Him because we are captivated by a relationship.
The Standard of Sacrifice
Jesus defines this friendship with a high bar: the willingness to lay down one’s life. While we may not all be called to a physical death, we are all called to “lay down” our lives in smaller, daily ways. We lay down our right to be right. We lay down our comfort to serve someone else. We set aside our busy schedules to listen to a hurting soul.
This is not a suggestion; it is a command. But notice that He commands us to love “as I have loved you.” He never asks us to give something that He hasn’t already given us first. His love is the fuel for ours.
Chosen for a Purpose
The most humbling part of this passage is the reminder that we didn’t audition for this role. “You did not choose me, but I chose you.” You were handpicked by the Creator of the universe to be His friend. He didn’t choose you because you were perfect: He chose you so that you could go and bear fruit that lasts.

Prayer for Today
Heavenly Father, thank You for calling me Your friend. It is overwhelming to think that You want my companionship, not just my service. Help me to lay down my ego and my agenda today so that I can love others the way You have loved me. Let my life bear fruit that brings You glory. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
To You
Think about one relationship where you have been acting like a “servant” (doing things out of duty) rather than a “friend” (doing things out of love). Today, try to perform one act of service for that person with the joy of a friend rather than the obligation of a worker.
