Sometimes we look at God’s rules as a fence designed to keep us in, but what if they are actually a bridge designed to keep us connected?
The Fuses of Love – Daily Devotional for May 7
“If you keep my commandments, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and remain in his love.” (John 15:10)
Staying in the Current
For many of us, the word “commandment” brings up images of restrictions, “no-nos,” and cosmic police officers. We often fall into the trap of thinking that keeping the rules is a condition for earning God’s affection. But Jesus takes this concept much further.
He explains that keeping His word is not about gaining His love, but about staying in it.
Think of commandments as “fuses” of love. In a house, a fuse is designed to protect the system. It ensures the power stays on and the house stays safe. When we choose truth, mercy, and forgiveness, we are protecting the connection. We simply do not allow lies or anger to create distance between our hearts and Christ’s heart.
The Rules of the House
Imagine these as “house rules” in a healthy family. You might have rules like: “Don’t take things without asking,” or “Don’t go to bed without making peace.” These aren’t designed to make the children feel like prisoners. They are designed to make family life good, peaceful, and joyful.
When we follow God’s commandments, we aren’t trying to impress Him. We are choosing to live in the environment where His love can flourish. The commandments are like road signs that show us the direction. They point us toward the current of love that leads to true freedom.
Freedom Within the Lines
True freedom is not the ability to do whatever we want; it is the power to do what is right. A fish is only “free” as long as it stays in the water. Once it leaves the water to “be free” on the sand, it dies. Our “water” is the love of Christ, and the commandments are the boundaries that keep us swimming in the deep end of His grace.

Prayer for Today
Heavenly Father, help me to see Your commandments not as a burden, but as a gift. Thank You for the “house rules” that protect my peace and my relationship with You. Help me to choose truth and mercy today so that nothing comes between us. I want to stay in the center of Your love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
To You
Is there a specific “house rule” of God that you have been viewing as a restriction lately? Today, try to view it as a road sign pointing you toward freedom. Ask yourself: “How does following this commandment actually protect my heart?”
