The Weight of Our Own Shadows daily Devotional for July 9

We often think we are prepared for our mission because we have packed our lives with plans, opinions, and grievances. Yet, Jesus invites us to a life of “light baggage.” In today’s Daily Devotional for July 9, The Weight of Our Own Shadows, we examine why releasing our personal burdens is the only way to reach our destination.

“Take no gold, or silver, or copper in your belts, no bag for your journey, or two tunics, or sandals, or a staff.” (Matthew 10:9–10)

The Baggage That Holds Us Back

When Jesus commands His disciples to travel light, He isn’t giving economic advice. He warns us not to burden ourselves with insignificant things that steal our time and energy.

We often carry a heavy, invisible baggage: the stubborn need to be right, the obsession with our own “righteousness,” and the persistent grievances of the past. We cling to the identity of a victim, believing that our rights are always being violated, rather than embracing the identity of a leader who follows Christ.

We also burden ourselves with “wise” plans to fix the world, often failing to realize that our vision may be more about our own ego than God’s will. This baggage is not just a personal weight; it is a hindrance to everyone who follows us.

If we are trying to lead others toward the Kingdom while we ourselves are anchored to our past, our pride, or our fantasies, we will eventually stop halfway. If you want to walk toward the Kingdom and show others the way, you must travel light.

Let go of the “spare parts” you have gathered to protect your ego; they are the very things keeping you from moving forward.

Prayer for Today

Lord, I realize now that I have been carrying so much unnecessary weight. I have held onto my grievances, my need to be right, and my elaborate plans to change the world, all of which have only left me exhausted. Today, I choose to lighten my load. I surrender my past hurts, my obsession with my own rights, and my stubborn pride. Help me to trust that Your way is enough. Strip away what is insignificant so that I can walk freely toward You and truly lead others by Your example. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

To You

What is one “item” of emotional or mental baggage, perhaps a lingering grievance or a need to be proven right, that you are finally ready to set down so you can travel more freely today?
