Mercy Over Sacrifice – Daily Devotional for July 17
“If you had known what these words mean, ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice,’ you would not have condemned the innocent.” (Matthew 12:7)
The Trap of Self-Righteousness
Every day, we face the choice: are we serving God, or the rules we have created for ourselves?
The Pharisees in today’s Gospel looked at the hungry disciples and saw only “rule-breakers.” They were so focused on their own adherence to the law, their “sacrifice”, that they were completely blind to the human need right in front of them.
Sacrifice is our human way of trying to prove our worth to God through our own discipline, grit, and moral perfection. It is a way of saying, “Look at how much I am doing for You.”
But Jesus cuts through this posturing with a simple, devastating truth: God desires mercy, not sacrifice. Mercy is God’s way of reaching us, and it is the only way He wants us to reach others.
If our commitment to our religious practices or our “rightness” makes us cold, self-righteous, or insensitive to the suffering of those around us, we have fundamentally misunderstood our mission. We are busy offering sacrifices to a God who is already looking for ways to love the broken.
When you see others today, are you looking through the lens of your own rules, or through the lens of His compassion?

Prayer for Today
Lord, forgive me for the times I have prioritized my own rules, my own standards, and my need to be “right” over the needs of the people You have placed in my life. I have often offered You the sacrifice of my rigid discipline, yet missed the opportunity to show mercy. Soften my heart, Lord. Help me to stop judging the “rule-breakers” and start seeing the people who need Your compassion. Break the self-righteousness in me and replace it with the love that You demonstrated for us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
