Each year, on February 14, we peruse the store shelves for the perfect gift or card for a loved one. You’ve probably given and received some special valentines in your life. You’ve probably had some things wrapped in red foil or a heart-shaped box. Or maybe you’ve stood at a florist’s counter trying to decide on a “just right” arrangement of roses. But the first gift should be the St Valentine’s Day prayer.
St Valentine’s Day allows us to say “I love you” in a different, more festive way. But what is the real meaning of this so-called Loveday? What does it mean for Christians? Maybe the best gift for your loved one would be a St Valentine’s Day prayer for love.
Valentine’s Day Prayer for Lovers
Dear Lord, on this day of Saint Valentine, we come to you with open hearts, seeking your guidance and blessings for our relationships. We ask that you help us grow in love, deepen our connections, and build solid foundations for the future.

What is Biblical Love?
What the world needs now is true love, true biblical love. But just what is biblical love? For what love should we ask in St Valentine’s Day prayer?
Love is a Powerful Word
There are four types of love. The Greek language uses four words describing different kinds of human affection, all translated as “love” in English.
Eros
The Greek word “eros” is defined as a passionate emotion. It is physical, sexual attraction, infatuation, lust for power, wealth, or fame. It is also indicative of intense feelings of patriotism. It is commonly selfishly motivated and arises from a person’s inner desires.
Storge
The Greek word “storge” is an affectionate emotion. This love is a natural emotion typical of the bonds between parent and child or the attraction between a loyal citizen and a trustworthy ruler. However, both of these types of love are very unstable and are easily affected by present circumstances. They can wax cold and wane depending on the whim of the day.
Unfortunately, these are the very two types of love that seem to be most widely sought after. Indeed, most forms of media and music promote these forms of “love.” It is interesting to note that neither of these words is used for the love found in the New Testament.
Phileo
The third type of love is “phileo. “This is the cherishing and sweet love of a husband and wife, family members for one another, or the love of life-long friends. It is a profoundly tender love that holds someone or something dear to the heart.
Biblical Love
True Biblical love only comes from God. “But God demonstrates His love for us in this; While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8). This is “agape” love, the love of God.
It is selfless and sacrificial. This love is controlled not by emotion but by the mind, reason, and will. It does what is right no matter what the circumstances. This is the love Jesus Christ showed us by dying on the Cross for our sins. He was sinless and guiltless.
This love is available to each of us but must be received. So, ask for love in Valentine’s Day prayer.
So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love
Definition of Love in 1 Corinthians
Paul wrote about real love and its attributes in the First Letter to Corinthians. He emphasizes the importance of love for our salvation.
Real Love Does the Right Things for the Right Reasons
Paul says real love does things from a pure motive, and to do otherwise profits nothing!
“And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing.” (Corinthians 13:2-3)
Paul says, “I am nothing,” meaning that all would be worthless without love. “Love” is more valuable than all these endowments. Nothing can supply its place; nothing can be connected with salvation without it.
Real Love Has Certain Attributes
Paul says real love has certain unmistakable qualities.
“Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends. As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away.” (1 Corinthians 13:4-8)
Real Love Stands the Test of Time
Paul concludes this beautiful chapter on love in verse 13 by saying that in the end, three essential things will matter – FAITH, HOPE, and LOVE, and the greatest of these is real love!
“So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.” (1 Corinthians 13:13)
God’s Love for us Never Ends
God’s love for us is a love that endures; He always stands ready to forgive and pardon if we only turn to Him in trust and repentance. He only asks that you love Him enough to obey his salvation plan and constantly talk with Him in prayer. One of these could be the Valentine’s Day prayer, asking to teach us to love others.
