“But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” — Romans 5:8 (NIV)

More Than Just a Card

Let’s be real for a second, Valentine’s Day can feel incredibly cheap. We’re bombarded with this pressure to perform, to buy the right flowers, the expensive chocolate, or create this perfect, movie-script romantic moment. It’s transactional. It’s often mercantile. And if we’re honest, it can feel a little hollow.

We trade these symbols of affection, but deep down, we know that a box of candy isn’t the same thing as being truly known and truly loved.

The world tries to sell us a version of love that is essentially a fair trade: “I love you because you’re lovable,” or “I love you because of what you do for me.” But that’s not what happened on the Cross.

God didn’t wait for us to get our act together or to become “lovable” candidates for His affection. He didn’t wait for us to bring Him flowers. As the verse in Romans says, He loved us while we were messy, broken, and actively turning away from Him. That is the ultimate love story, not a romance novel, but a rescue mission.

God’s Perfect Valentine

We are living in an era where “fake” is becoming the default. With the rise of Artificial Intelligence and curated social media lives, it’s getting harder to distinguish between what’s real and what’s generated. We see this massive wave of superficiality and kitsch because, frankly, many people haven’t tasted the real thing.

They don’t know what deep, sacrificial value looks like, so they settle for the shiny veneer.

It’s ironic that St. Valentine was actually a bishop and a martyr, a man who literally died for his convictions, yet his day has been hijacked by shallow consumerism.

We crave something authentic. We don’t need more “generated” perfection; we need the rugged, bloody, beautiful reality of Jesus. The Cross cuts through the noise of our modern, artificial world and shows us a love that isn’t manufactured or filtered. It is the only thing solid enough to build a life on.

Prayer for Today

God, I am tired of the cheap imitations of love that the world offers. Thank You for not waiting until I was perfect to love me. Thank You for the Cross, which proves that I am valuable to You, not because of what I buy or achieve, but because of who You are. Help me to crave what is real and to show that kind of authentic, unconditional love to others today. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

To You

Look past the commercial noise today. Identify one person in your life who might feel overlooked or unlovable right now, and do something small but genuine for them, not out of obligation, but just to remind them they are seen.
