“Jesus replied, ‘They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.’” (Matthew 14:16)
The Call to Real Responsibility
When the great crowd gathered and grew hungry in the desolate place (Matthew 14:13–21), the disciples offered a very modern, rational suggestion: “Dismiss the crowds, so they can go into the villages and buy food for themselves.” It was the classic “every man for himself” mindset. It outsourced the problem, keeping things clean, efficient, and detached.
Jesus completely rejects that approach. Instead, He turns to His followers and tells them to feel the weight of responsibility: “You give them something to eat.”
In our twenty-first-century context, this command challenges us to remember that we are not merely isolated consumers living inside our comfortable bubbles; we are deeply interconnected members of a human community.
True leadership, whether in a family, a workplace, or a church, is not about running an efficient operation or looking out exclusively for number one. It means stepping up and taking responsibility for the hunger of the person right beside us.
That hunger might be physical lack, but it is just as often a desperate spiritual hunger for connection, meaning, and relief from crushing loneliness. When Christ asks us to feed them, He is inviting us to stop hiding behind our excuses and become instruments of His provision.

Prayer for Today
Lord, forgive me for the times I have wanted to dismiss the needs of others with a cold, “every man for himself” attitude. I confess that I often prefer my comfortable bubble, avoiding the messiness of other people’s burdens. Remind me that You have called me to lead with a servant’s heart. Open my eyes to the physical and spiritual hungers around me, and give me the grace, courage, and generosity to share what You have given me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
