Today is the day the world went dark so that we could finally see the truth: Love doesn’t just say “I like you”, it says “I will die for you.” The Day Mercy Won – Good Friday.
The Day Mercy Won – Good Friday
“When he had received the drink, Jesus said, ‘It is finished.’ With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.” – John 19:30 (NIV)
The Finality of “Finished”
The last words of Jesus weren’t a whisper of defeat; they were a cry of completion. In the original Greek, the word is Tetelestai. In the first century, this was a business term. When a debt was fully settled, the merchant would write Tetelestai across the bill. It meant “Paid in Full.”
On the cross, Jesus wasn’t just ending His life; He was closing an account. Every mistake, every “stench” of our past, and every “if only” we’ve carried was nailed to that wood. The debt is settled. You can stop trying to pay for things that have already been covered.
The Torn Barrier
The moment Jesus breathed His last, the massive, thick curtain in the Temple, the one that kept people away from the “Holy of Holies”, tore from top to bottom.
- It tore from the top because God was the one doing the tearing.
- It tore, revealing that the “Keep Out” sign was gone forever.
Because of today, you don’t need a perfect track record to talk to God. The way is wide open. The barrier isn’t your sin; the bridge is His sacrifice.

Prayer for Today
Heavenly Father, I stand in awe of the cross today. Thank You for the Tetelestai over my life. Forgive me for trying to pay a debt that You have already settled. Today, I simply rest in Your finished work. Help me to sit in the gravity of Your sacrifice so I can truly understand the depth of Your love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
To You
Today is a day for “holy silence.” Sometime today, spend five minutes in total quiet. No phone, no music. Just look at your hands and realize they are clean, not because of what you did, but because of what He did. Let the words “It is finished” sink into your soul.
