On the fourth day of the Easter Octave, we walk alongside two disciples who, though grieving and confused, unknowingly encounter the risen Jesus. Their journey from disappointment to joy is a mirror of our own faith journey, especially in moments when God feels distant or silent. Recognize Jesus!
Easter Octave Devotional – Day 4
“Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?” (Luke 24:32)
Recognize Jesus on the Road
These two followers had hoped Jesus would be the one to redeem Israel, but after His crucifixion, their hope collapsed. As they traveled to Emmaus, burdened by sorrow, Jesus Himself drew near and walked with them. Still, they didn’t recognize Him.
How often do we do the same? How many times has Jesus walked beside us in our struggles, but we failed to notice Him, hidden in the words of a friend, the comfort of Scripture, or the peace that came out of nowhere?
Recognition came not when Jesus explained the Scriptures, but when He broke the bread. Their eyes were opened in that moment of intimacy and familiarity.
Living the Word Today
This Easter season, Christ draws near to you—not only in your joy but especially in your confusion, questions, and quiet walks of disappointment. If your heart is heavy or your path unclear, know this: Jesus is walking beside you. You might not recognize Him right away, but He is there—listening, teaching, and waiting to reveal Himself.
“You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.” (Jeremiah 29:13)
Ask yourself today: Do I truly expect to encounter the risen Christ in my daily life? Am I listening for His voice through Scripture, relationships, and even my routine?
Let your heart burn within you as you seek Him.
Prayer for Today
Risen Lord, thank You for walking with me, even when I fail to recognize You. Open my eyes and my heart to Your presence in the ordinary and the sacred. Let my heart burn with joy as I hear Your voice in Scripture and experience Your nearness in the breaking of bread. Help me to live this day in the fullness of Easter joy, aware that You are with me always. Amen.
