Empowered Will – Daily Devotional for February 17

“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” — John 15:5 (NIV)

Beyond Human Strength

We all know the pull of willpower. It’s that internal force that helps us say “no” to the chocolate fudge sundae or helps a CEO outpace the competition. Discipline and determination are vital to a successful life, but on their own, they often run dry. Willpower might get you started, but it rarely has the stamina to bring you across the finish line.

The struggle many of us face is relying solely on our own grit. We treat God as a last resort rather than our primary source of energy. But Jesus was very clear: “Apart from me you can do nothing.”

This isn’t meant to discourage us, but to point us toward a much greater power—one that infuses our human efforts with divine energy to help us finish well.

The Sacred Harmony

In our spiritual walk, it is easy to fall into two extremes. Some rely entirely on their own strength, ignore God, and burn out in the process. Others shift all responsibility to God, using terms like “predestination” or “God’s will” as excuses to avoid taking action in their own lives.

True spiritual maturity is found in the harmony between these two. God created you with free will, and He respects that freedom. He doesn’t want to replace your responsibility; He wants to empower it.

As free people, we make a conscious, daily decision to invite God into our circumstances. When we do, He doesn’t take over our will, He energizes it. An empowered will is a human choice met by a divine power.

Prayer for Today

Heavenly Father, I thank You for the gift of free will and the strength You have given me. Forgive me for the times I’ve tried to run the race on my own strength. Today, I consciously invite Your power into my willpower. Energize my decisions and help me to remain in You, so that I may cross the finish line by Your grace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

To You

Think of one goal or habit you have been struggling to maintain through sheer willpower alone. Today, stop fighting it for a moment. Instead, invite God into that specific space. Say, “Lord, I choose this path, but I need Your power to walk it.”
