Today, in our Daily Devotional for April 22, Human Pride and Divine Reality, we are looking at the irony of human pride. When we compare our vast intellects to the scale of the universe, we find a humbling reality that demands a bit of honesty.
Human Pride and Divine Reality – Daily Devotional for April 22
“The fool has said in his heart, ‘There is no God.'” (Psalm 14:1)
The Degree and the Dust
There is a strange humor in the way we humans carry ourselves. We live like tiny ants on a tiny speck of dust in the vastness of the universe. It is ironic when a person earns a PhD and proudly declares from a stage that there is no God. We use our intellectual achievements to try to rule out the very Architect who gave us the capacity to think.
We often mistake “knowing how things work” for “being in control of how they work.” Our advanced degrees can describe the laws of nature, but they cannot rewrite them.
The Limits of Human Control
Despite our technological and academic progress, we struggle to control even the most basic elements of our existence. Consider what we are powerless to stop:
The Heart. We cannot help but “explode” in anger or fall into the traps of hate and conflict.
The World. We cannot stop the threat of nuclear weapons or the cycle of theft and violence that plagues our streets.
The End. Most significantly, we cannot stop ourselves from dying. No matter how many books we read or titles we earn, we are all headed toward the same biological conclusion.
Finding Wisdom in Humility
When we realize how little we actually control, the denial of God begins to look less like “intellectualism” and more like a refusal to see the obvious. The Bible doesn’t mince words: it calls the denial of God foolishness.
A fool is not someone who lacks intelligence, but someone who lacks the perspective to see their own place in the world. When we stop trying to be the gods of our own tiny speck of dust, we finally become free to know the One who holds the entire universe in His hands.

Prayer for Today
Heavenly Father, forgive me for the times I have been proud of my own limited knowledge. Help me to remember that I am a guest on this speck of dust You created. I admit that I cannot control my emotions, the world, or my own mortality. Today, I surrender my need for control to You. Thank You for being the steady hand in a world I cannot master. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
To You
Take a moment to look at the sky or a simple patch of earth today. Remind yourself that you don’t have to carry the weight of the world on your shoulders. You aren’t in control, and that is actually good news because it means you can trust the One who is.
