“Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits.” – Proverbs 18:21 (ESV)

The Power of Your Words

It’s a challenge to speak correctly when you feel completely wrong. When emotions are running high or low, our words can become emotional rather than sensible.

But as a mature Christian, you are called to allow wisdom to rise above emotion. Our feelings are real, but they should never be the factor that determines the words we speak or the decisions we make. Life experience shows us that if we didn’t give in to the game of “how I feel,” we could accomplish so much more.

Remember the story of creation. God spoke non-existent things into being with faith-filled words. You are created in His image, and you too have the power to speak things into existence.

You can speak positive things about yourself and your situation, and in a sense, “prophesy your future.” This isn’t about ignoring reality, but about speaking God’s reality over your circumstances.

A Reflection of Your Heart

The words you speak reveal a lot about the condition of your heart. As a representative of God, your words should reflect His character. If your words are consistently negative, critical, or self-pitying, it may be a sign that you are meditating on your problems rather than on God’s goodness.

The key to speaking life-giving words is to fill your heart with joy and gratitude. When you meditate on the goodness of God, your heart will be filled. And as Jesus said, “the mouth speaks what the heart is full of” (Luke 6:45). Your words will then naturally glorify Him and become a powerful testimony to others.

Prayer for Today

Heavenly Father, thank you for the power you have given me in my words. Forgive me for the times I have spoken in fear or emotion instead of faith. Help me to guard my tongue and to meditate on your goodness. I pray that my words would reflect your character and be a source of life and encouragement to those around me. Amen.

To You

Take a moment today to be intentional with your words. Try speaking a positive word about your future or a difficult situation you’re facing. Watch how this simple act of faith can change your perspective.
