Welcome to your daily devotional for September 17, Joy of Out-reach. Today, we’re going to examine a powerful truth about happiness and purpose. In a culture that often celebrates self-focus, the Christian life calls us to something radically different. Let’s explore how God’s best blessings are found when we stop looking in and start reaching out.
Daily Devotional for September 17
“Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.” – Philippians 2:3-4 (NIV)
The Joy of Out-reach
In a world that encourages us to be our own biggest fans, it’s easy to get lost in self-centeredness. We can become so self-absorbed that we never experience the real joy of forgetting about ourselves and serving others. This mindset is a spiritual poison; it keeps us miserable, isolated, and far from the life God intended for us.
Jesus’s example and teachings stand in stark contrast to this. He models a life of selfless sacrifice, not selfish ambition.
True joy is not a feeling we can gain by focusing on our own needs; it is a byproduct of serving others with the love of God. The more we turn inward, the more unhappy we become. God didn’t create us for “in-reach,” but for out-reach.
The Power of Giving
The good news is that when we reach out to others, God promises to reach in and meet our needs. This is a divine principle: what you make happen for someone else, God will make happen for you.
When we show mercy and love instead of judgment and criticism, our own lives are blessed. The Bible tells us that mercy triumphs over judgment.
So, let’s get busy being a blessing. Instead of criticizing those who are different from us, we can choose to show them the same mercy that God has shown to us. By serving others, our joy will increase exponentially. It’s a paradox of the Kingdom: by giving ourselves away, we find our truest selves.

Prayer for Today
Heavenly Father, forgive me for the times I have been self-centered. Help me to let go of selfish ambition and pride and to value others as you do. Fill my heart with a desire to serve those around me and to show them the same mercy you have shown me. I pray that as I reach out to others, you would meet all of my needs and fill me with your joy. Amen.
To You
What is one small way you can serve someone else today? It could be a simple act of kindness, a word of encouragement, or a prayer. Make a plan to do it, and watch how God works in your own life in return.
