Daily Devotional for September 16
“Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm.” – Proverbs 13:20 (ESV)
A Foundation of Trust
The Bible is clear: we are not to seek or follow the advice of those who live in opposition to God’s will. It’s easy to fall into this trap, especially when we feel a connection to someone.
But for true, life-giving counsel, we must turn to those who possess a mature spiritual character and are making good decisions in their own lives.
A genuine friend is someone who loves you enough to disagree with you when necessary. They won’t just tell you what you want to hear, but what you need to hear, even if it’s difficult.
This kind of loving honesty is a reflection of God’s heart. Their advice is rooted not in worldly opinion, but in a desire for your ultimate good and spiritual growth. The quality of your relationships has a direct impact on the quality of your life.
Wisdom in Your Circle
When seeking a confidant, trustworthiness is just as important as spiritual maturity. The text today reminds us of a simple but crucial rule: if a person shares someone else’s private secrets with you, you can be sure they will also share yours.
Gossip and broken trust are signs of a lack of integrity and a heart that is not yet fully aligned with God’s.
Choosing your friends wisely is a form of self-preservation. It is protecting your heart, your secrets, and your future from harm.
Yes, we must indeed accept every person for who they are. And our good friends often have completely different views or lifestyles from ours. However, it would be wise to spend more time with those friends who build you up, rather than those who tear you down.
It would be wise to be near those who strengthen your faith, who will pray for you in secret, and who will respect your secrets.

Prayer for Today
Heavenly Father, thank you for the wisdom in Your Word. Please give me the discernment to choose my friends and counselors wisely. Lead me to people who will love me enough to speak the truth and who can be trusted with my heart. Help me to be that kind of friend to others, so that I can bring You glory through my relationships. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
