“Jesus did not answer a word. So his disciples came to him and urged him, ‘Send her away, for she keeps crying out after us.’” (Matthew 15:23)
God’s Time Is Not Our Time
In the encounter with the Canaanite woman, Jesus appears to act completely out of sync with human urgency (Matthew 15:21–28). He stays silent when help is desperately needed, and the disciples simply want to get rid of her to stop the noise. To our frantic human minds, His silence feels like cold rejection: “God, do something! Why are you delaying?”
Yet, this passage reveals a vital truth about how God works within time. God’s time is never our time, because divine timing requires space for our souls to grow.
The silence of Jesus was not indifference; it was a sacred pause that forced the woman to cross a spiritual barrier. It lifted her out of a transactional, “customer-level” mindset, where she merely expected a quick fix, and propelled her into a place of complete, humble trust where she could speak of the humble “crumbs” falling from the table.
God sometimes remains silent not to avoid our cries, but so that our hurried hearts can finally come to their senses, mature, and dare to take a genuine step of faith.

Lord, I confess that Your silence often frightens me. When I cry out for help and hear nothing, I am tempted to despair or demand immediate answers. Forgive me for expecting You to operate on my rushed timeline. Help me to trust the sacred spaces You create in my life. When You are silent, teach me to listen deeper, to drop my demands, and to approach You with a posture of complete, trusting surrender. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
