We often measure our spiritual journey by what we have sacrificed, viewing our “leaving” as a depletion of our lives. But Jesus reveals a different perspective: following Him is not about becoming impoverished; it is about finding the freedom to move. In today’s Daily Devotional for July 11, The Space for Abundance, we look at why the “baggage” we drop is the key to our growth.

“Peter answered him, ‘We have left everything to follow you! What then will there be for us?’” (Matthew 19:27)

Clearing the Path

When the disciples asked what their reward would be for leaving everything, they were really asking a question about meaning.

We often look at the things we have given up, our comfort, our control, our rigid plans, or our pride, and we call it a “loss.” But in the Kingdom’s economy, this “leaving” is a necessary act of clearing space. You cannot embark on a life-changing journey if you are still dragging heavy, unnecessary baggage behind you.

“Leaving everything” is not about impoverishing yourself; it is about de-cluttering your soul so that you have the capacity to receive what God actually wants to give you.

When we clear the space, we are not losing; we are opening our lives to the movement of the Holy Spirit. If we hold onto our old securities with a tight grip, we are not truly “following”; we are merely dragging our old lives along with us as we walk.

True meaning is found not in what we accumulate, but in the emptiness we create so that God can fill it with Himself.

Prayer for Today

Lord, I have often viewed my sacrifices as losses, feeling that I am losing parts of myself along the way. Today, shift my perspective. Help me to see that whenever I let go of my control, my ego, or my old plans, I am not becoming poorer; I am simply clearing space for You. Teach me to trust that what You provide in return for my surrender is infinitely better than the weight I have been carrying. I want to travel light so that I can follow You wherever You lead. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

To You

What is one “weight” you have been carrying that you’ve been afraid to let go of because you think it’s too valuable? Can you ask God today to show you what He wants to fill that space with instead?
