We often operate under the illusion that we can manage every storm that life throws our way. In today’s Daily Devotional for June 30, “The Strength of the Cry,” we reflect on how turning to God in our moments of desperation is not an admission of defeat but the ultimate act of faith.
The Strength of the Cry – Daily Devotional for June 30
“The disciples went and woke him, saying, ‘Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!’” (Matthew 8:25)
Beyond the Illusion of Self-Sufficiency
The disciples in the boat were experienced fishermen; they knew the sea and understood how to handle a vessel. Yet, when the storm became overwhelming, their own expertise was not enough. They did something profound: they woke Jesus up (Matthew 8:23-27).
This moment serves as an antidote to the pride that often whispers to us, “You do not need anyone else; you are the god of your own life. You can handle this alone.”
Pride is a destructive force because it keeps us trapped in our own limited resources, refusing to reach out for help until we are already sinking. Recognizing that we cannot control every outcome is not a weakness; it is the beginning of wisdom.
When we cry out to God in the middle of our storms, we are acknowledging a higher authority. We are admitting that while our own capacity is limited, the One to whom even the wind and waves obey is not. This cry is an act of total surrender, and it is the very thing that pushes away the foolishness of self-reliance.

Prayer for Today
Lord, forgive me for the times I have relied on my own strength until I was exhausted and overwhelmed. I confess that my pride often prevents me from calling out to You because I want to believe I can fix everything myself. Help me to remember that You are always present, even when it feels like You are sleeping. Today, I bring my storms to You. I recognize my limitations, and I place my trust in Your power to bring peace to the chaos in my life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
To You
What “storm” are you currently trying to navigate in your own strength, feeling like you are close to sinking; what would it look like today to stop relying on your own control and turn that situation over to God with a sincere prayer for help?
