“Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword.” (Matthew 10:34)
When Silence Becomes Participation
It is easy to mislabel our fear as “Christian patience.” We see the life of a loved one spiraling, we witness choices that lead toward destruction, yet we remain silent.
We tell ourselves we are being patient or kind, but often we are simply engaging in self-preservation. We fear that speaking the truth will “spoil the relationship” or tarnish our image in their eyes. We prioritize our own comfort and the appearance of peace over the actual well-being of the person we claim to care about.
Jesus speaks of the “sword” not as a weapon of aggression against others, but as the surgical act of Truth.
When our relationships are built on the foundations of avoidance or denial, they are like buildings in an emergency state; they look like they are standing, but the foundations have long been washed away. The sword of Truth cuts through the facade. It reveals that our silence is not mercy; it is, in fact, a quiet participation in another person’s downfall.
Real love is brave enough to risk the temporary conflict of a difficult conversation to ensure that the other person finds solid ground.

Prayer for Today
Lord, grant me the courage to love others more than I love my own peace. Forgive me for the times I have stayed silent out of fear, calling it “patience” when it was really just a desire to protect myself. Help me to see when a relationship is built on a crumbling foundation and give me the words to speak the truth in love. Let Your Truth be the light that guides my interactions, and let me never be an accomplice to the destruction of those I love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
