In today’s Daily Devotional for March 21, “Words Like No Other,” we find ourselves in the middle of a heated debate. It’s a scene filled with confusion, prejudice, and soldiers sent to do a job who ended up completely mesmerized.
Words Like No Other – Daily Devotional for March 21
“No one ever spoke the way this man does,” the guards replied. — John 7:46 (NIV)
The Authority of the Truth
In John 7, the atmosphere is tense. The religious leaders are fed up and send temple guards to arrest Jesus. These were professional men, likely used to dealing with all sorts of agitators and speakers. But when they return to their bosses, they are empty-handed.
When asked why they didn’t bring Him in, they didn’t give a technical excuse or a report on the crowd’s size. They simply said, “No one ever spoke the way this man does.”
There is an authority in the voice of Jesus that transcends human logic, titles, or physical strength. When Truth speaks, even those sent to silence it have to stop and listen.
The Trap of “Knowing Better”
While the guards were moved by the spirit of Jesus’ words, the Pharisees were blinded by their own “knowledge.” They argued that no prophet comes from Galilee and mocked anyone who believed otherwise. They were so busy checking their boxes and looking at Jesus’ geography that they completely missed His divinity.
It is a dangerous thing to let what we think we know block us from what God is actually doing. The Pharisees had the “facts” (or so they thought), but the guards had the encounter.
The Courage to Speak Up
Following Jesus often means standing in the “middle” of a divided crowd. You might find yourself surrounded by people who are cynical or dismissive. Like the guards, your best defense isn’t a complex argument; it’s the simple recognition that His voice is unlike any other you’ve ever heard.

Prayer for Today
Heavenly Father, thank You for the authority of Your Word. Lord, I don’t want to be like the Pharisees, so caught up in my own rules and expectations that I miss what You are doing right in front of me. Give me ears like the guards, ears that recognize the unique power of Your voice. Help me to be brave like Nicodemus, willing to stand for the truth even when it’s unpopular. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
To You
Is there a “rule” or a “prejudice” you’re holding onto that might be keeping you from seeing God at work in someone or somewhere unexpected? Ask God today to clear your vision so you can see Him as He truly is, not just as you expect Him to be.
