We often want to jump straight into “doing” for God, thinking that activity is the primary measure of a Christian life. Yet, Jesus invites us to a different order of things. “Then he said to his disciples, ‘The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.’” (Matthew 9:37-38)
Where Service Begins
It is a profound spiritual principle that true service is always born of prayer. Without prayer, our attempts to “help” the world are often just an extension of our own ego, our own limited vision, or our own desire to be busy.
When we operate out of our own strength, we see people as tasks to be managed or problems to be solved. But when we first meet the Master of the Harvest in the stillness, our vision changes.
Only in His presence do we begin to see the world as He sees it, not as a collection of chaotic circumstances, but as a vast field waiting for the touch of His grace.
Prayer is not a distraction from our work; it is the very environment where the work is defined. When we spend time with the Lord, we stop trying to dictate the harvest ourselves and start asking Him where He needs us to labor. This keeps us from the exhaustion of self-reliance and aligns our hearts with His compassion.
Today, start by simply sitting with the Master, and let Him show you the fields that are ready for His love.

Prayer for Today
Lord, forgive me for the times I have rushed into action without first seeking Your perspective. I confess that my “service” often lacks Your heart because I am too focused on my own plans. Today, I come to You, the Master of the Harvest. Open my eyes so that I can see the world as You see it. Help me to labor not out of my own urgency, but out of the compassion I receive from You. Teach me to pray first, so that my actions may be a true reflection of Your love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
