Today, in the Daily Devotional for April 8, “The Emmaus Road,” we look at a road many of us have traveled: the path of disappointment.
The Emmaus Road – Daily Devotional for April 8
“But we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel.” (Luke 24:21)
The Weight of “We Hoped”
There is a deep trauma hidden in the phrase “But we had hoped.” These two disciples were leaving Jerusalem with heavy hearts. They expected a political liberator and a story of success, but they found a cross and a tomb instead.
We often walk our own “Emmaus road” when our prayers seem unanswered or when we are disappointed by our community or even ourselves.
Pain can act like a fog over our eyes. The Gospel tells us that Jesus drew near and walked with them, but they did not recognize Him. This fog is often made of our own preconceived notions about how God should act.
We get so caught up in what didn’t happen that we miss the Savior walking right beside us.
The Turning Point
Jesus does not immediately perform a miracle or something. He listens to their doubts and then opens the Scriptures to them. He shows them that suffering was not a mistake, but part of the plan.
However, their eyes remained closed until they made a choice. They invited the “stranger” inside: “Stay with us, for it is nearly evening.”
If they had not extended that invitation, they would have remained in the dark.
It was in the breaking of the bread that their eyes were finally opened. At that moment, Jesus became invisible to them. He was no longer just beside them; through the Word and the Bread, He was now within them.
Their exhaustion vanished, the night no longer seemed scary, and they ran back to the very place they had been fleeing.

Prayer for Today
Heavenly Father, thank You for walking with me even when I am heading in the wrong direction. Forgive me for the times I let my disappointments blind me to Your presence. Today, I invite You in. Stay with me in my daily tasks and my quiet moments. Turn my discouragement into a new hope. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
To You
Do not stop talking to Jesus today, even if you feel let down. Invite Him into your routine with a simple “Stay with me.” Look for Him in the small things: a shared meal, a kind word, or a moment of prayer. He is using your disappointments to build a stronger, deeper faith.
