It is a joy to walk with you in this Daily Devotional for April 9, Witnesses, Not Lawyers. Today, we are looking at the specific job description Jesus gave us. It is simpler than you might think, but it requires a different kind of courage.
Witnesses, Not Lawyers – Daily Devotional for April 9
“You are witnesses of these things.” – Luke 24:48 (NIV)
Experience Over Argument
The Gospel clearly defines our mission: we are called to be witnesses. It is important to notice that Jesus does not call us to be His lawyers. We are not tasked with defending Him in a courtroom of logic or proving His existence through complex theological arguments.
A witness is simply someone who tells what they have seen and experienced firsthand. You do not need to memorize the entire Bible or master every theological debate to fulfill this role. You only need to share how God has moved in your own life.
Strength in the Cracks
Being a witness does not mean acting like a perfect, flawless person. In fact, true witnessing is often the courage to admit our own weakness. It is through our “cracks” that God’s power is most visible.
A real witness says, “I am weak, and I am wounded, but God is healing me.” You are just a human being who is trying.
The Pointing Finger
Our job is not to judge others or prove them wrong. Our job is to shine a light on reality. As John the Baptist said, “He must increase, but I must decrease.” We are not the destination; we are the road signs pointing the way to Jesus.
The Greek word for witness is martys, which is where we get the word “martyr.” This reminds us that standing for the truth has a cost. It means staying faithful to what you know is true even when it is unpopular, inconvenient, or risky.

Prayer for Today
Heavenly Father, thank You for calling me to be a witness and not a judge or a lawyer. Forgive me for the times I have tried to act perfectly rather than be honest. Give me the courage to share my story and the humility to point others toward You. Let my life be a simple reflection of Your healing power. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
To You
You don’t need to win an argument today. If a conversation about faith comes up, simply share one thing God has done for you recently. Remember that your story of struggle and healing is more powerful than any logical proof.
