The Everyday Apostle Daily Devotional for June 7

Daily Devotional for June 7, The Everyday Apostle. As we reflect on the nature of our purpose, let us consider that our calling is rarely found in the extraordinary but rather in the quiet details of our everyday lives.

The Everyday Apostle – Daily Devotional for June 7

“As Jesus went on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax collector’s booth. “Follow me,” he told him, and Matthew got up and followed him.” (Matthew 9:9)

While Matthew’s calling was specific, to leave the customs house and follow Jesus, the principle remains general for every believer: our calling is woven directly into our daily routines. You do not need to become a preacher, priest, or monk to fulfill your purpose. Instead, you are invited to recognize your calling through two primary channels.

1. The Call to be a “Living Witness”

Every Christian is called to be a “continuation” of Jesus in this world. You are the bridge through which God reaches others.

This means that wherever you find yourself, in your family, at your job, or within your neighborhood, you are called to act as a believer. Your life itself becomes a sermon, demonstrating to those around you what God’s love truly looks like.

2. The Call to “Sanctify Worldliness”

Many who met Jesus did not leave their professions; they simply returned home and continued their work, but with a new light. Your calling might manifest in three specific ways:

  • Responsibility. The commitment to be an honest, ethical professional in your chosen field.
  • Relationships. The intentional creation of harmony within your family, raising children in the faith, and acting as a source of peace in your environment.
  • Creativity. The dedication to using your unique talents to make the world a brighter and more just place.

Regardless of your station in life, your work is a holy space where God’s grace can be felt. You are called to bring a new light to the tasks already sitting on your desk or the relationships already present in your home.

Prayer for Today

Lord, thank You for calling me exactly where I am. Help me to be a living witness in my family and my work. May I sanctify the ordinary moments of this day, acting with honesty, peace, and creativity. Let me be the bridge through which Your love reaches others. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

To You

Where are you currently “working” that feels mundane? Today, try to view that specific task or relationship as your “customs house.” How would your approach change if you saw that exact role as your primary way to be a bridge for God’s love?
