Expanding Our Vision Daily Devotional for June 3

Today, in our Daily Devotional for June 3, Expanding Our Vision, we confront the subtle temptation to shrink the majesty of God until it fits within the small box of our own logic.

“You are greatly mistaken, because you know neither the Scriptures nor the power of God.” (Mark 12:24)

The Trap of a Closed Mind

In today’s Gospel (Mark 12:18-27), the Sadducees approach Jesus with a clever, contrived puzzle about the resurrection. They were the religious elite who prided themselves on logic, believing only in what they could touch, count, or rationally explain. By trying to force the concept of eternity into the strict rules of earthly inheritance, they hoped to prove that life after death was absurd.

We often fall into the same trap. We are modern “Sadducees” whenever we decide that our own limited experience is the final authority on what God can or cannot do. When we encounter something that defies our understanding, we tend to dismiss it rather than expand our faith. We ask, “How can I explain this with my mind?” instead of asking, “How can God’s love change this situation?”

Living Beyond Earthly Limits

A “closed mind” is the real barrier to faith. It is the belief that this world is all we have and that God must operate according to the boundaries we have established.

But Jesus reminds us that God’s power is not constrained by our definitions. His reality, His Kingdom, functions on a higher plane of love and grace that our earthly logic cannot fully grasp.

To follow Jesus is to acknowledge that the Creator is far greater than the creation. It is the brave decision to trust in His power even when our current circumstances seem impossible or unexplainable. True faith begins where our logic ends.

Prayer for Today

Lord, forgive me for the times I have limited You to what I can understand. Break down the walls of my “closed mind” and help me to see through the eyes of faith. Teach me to rely on the depth of Your Scriptures and the limitless nature of Your power. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

To You

Is there a situation in your life right now that you have labeled “impossible” simply because you cannot see a logical solution? Today, stop trying to solve it with your own calculations. Instead, pray, “Lord, I trust Your power more than my logic. Work in this situation in a way that only You can.”
