Freedom of Forgiveness Daily Devotional for September 14

Welcome to your daily devotional for September 14, The Freedom of Forgiveness. Today we’re going to tackle one of the most difficult commands in all of Scripture: forgiving those who have hurt us. It seems impossible, but God’s Word promises that it’s not only possible, it’s also the path to our own freedom and justice.

Daily Devotional for September 14

“But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great… Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.” – Luke 6:35-36 (NIV)

The Freedom of Forgiveness

When someone hurts us, our immediate, natural reaction is to hold a grudge. We replay the offense over and over in our minds, convincing ourselves that we can’t possibly forgive what was done.

This thought pattern is a trap. We end up meditating on the pain and the person who caused it, allowing a spiritual poison to take root in our hearts. The very thing we believe we’re doing to hurt them is actually hurting us the most.

Forgiving an enemy isn’t about excusing their behavior; it’s about releasing ourselves from the bondage of bitterness. This seems counterintuitive and nearly impossible.

But Jesus commands us to do it anyway, telling us to love our enemies and pray for those who abuse us. He never asks us to do something that isn’t for our good, nor does He ask us to do anything without providing the strength to accomplish it.

The key isn’t to dwell on how difficult it is, but to simply make up our minds to obey.

God Is Our Vindicator

The reason we can choose to forgive is that we don’t have to be our own judge and jury. God is perfectly just, and justice is one of His most admirable traits. When we are hurt or offended, He asks us to do our part—to forgive and pray—and He promises to do the rest. He will be our Vindicator. He will bring justice.

By letting go of the desire for personal vengeance, we allow God to step in. He can take even our deepest pain and make it work for our good (Romans 8:28). He promises to justify, vindicate, and pay us back for our pain, even saying we will receive “double for our trouble” (Isaiah 61:7). Our forgiveness doesn’t let the other person off the hook; it places them in the hands of a righteous and just God who will handle it perfectly.

Prayer for Today

Heavenly Father, I confess that forgiving those who have hurt me is often difficult. Forgive me for holding onto bitterness and for allowing my mind to dwell on pain. Help me to make a conscious choice today to release my grudges and trust You to be my Vindicator. Give me the strength to love my enemies and to pray for those who have hurt me, knowing that You are just and will handle it perfectly. Amen.

To You

Remember why we pray for those who hurt us. We ask for God’s mercy so they might understand their mistake and repent, so a miracle can happen, and their hardened hearts can be changed.
