The Humility of Mercy – Daily Devotional for June 22

The Humility of Mercy Daily Devotional for June 22

We often confuse the firm rejection of evil with judging the person. In today’s Daily Devotional for June 22, The Humility of Mercy, we look at why the command to stop judging is not a call to indifference, but a call to keep our hearts alive.

The Humility of Mercy – Daily Devotional for June 22

“Do not judge, or you too will be judged.” (Matthew 7:1)

Discerning Evil Without Hardening the Heart

It is important to clarify that Jesus is not calling us to ignore injustice or to practice a “tolerance” that is, in fact, just indifference. When we see someone acting unjustly, our negative reaction is often a justified response of our conscience. However, the danger arises when that reaction shifts into a hardened heart.

Jesus warns against judgment because a hardened heart cannot solve the situation; it only adds to it.

When we judge with a cold or bitter heart, we are trying to overcome evil with more evil. We lose our clarity and become trapped in the same destructive cycle as the person we are criticizing.

Not judging means refusing to let our hearts become stone. We can stand firmly against injustice, and we can speak clearly about what is wrong, but we must do so with a heart that remains anchored in grace rather than hatred. A hardened heart eventually becomes part of the evil it seeks to oppose.

The true path is to oppose the wrong while keeping our inner vessel open to the possibility of change, restoration, and mercy.

Prayer for Today

Lord, grant me the wisdom to recognize injustice without losing my own peace. Forgive me for the times when my frustration hardened my heart. Help me to stand firmly against what is wrong, but keep my spirit from becoming bitter or cruel. I want to fight evil with the strength of Your love, not by mirroring the darkness I see around me. Keep my heart soft, sensitive to You, and always open to Your guidance. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

To You

Think of a situation where you feel a justified anger toward an injustice; how can you express that disapproval today in a way that is firm and responsible, but does not allow your own heart to become hardened or vengeful?
