Welcome to your daily devotional for February 6. Today, we’re diving into a topic that gets to the very core of our spiritual walk: Pure Motives.
Pure Motives – Daily Devotional for February 6
“Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.” — Matthew 6:1 (NIV)
Clean Hands vs. A Pure Heart
It is entirely possible to have clean hands while harboring a heart that is anything but pure. We often focus on the “what”—the good works we perform, the hours we spend in prayer, or the help we give to others.
These are all wonderful, but Jesus reminds us that God is much more interested in the “why.”
If we give to the needy or pray specifically so that others will admire our “spirituality,” we’ve already received our reward in full. That reward is the fleeting applause of man, which is a poor substitute for the eternal affirmation of God. If affirmation is our primary driver, we lose the spiritual weight of our work.
“May God Be Glorified”
In ancient times, believers often lived by a simple, grounding phrase: “May God be glorified.” This was their compass. It served as a constant reminder that we are not the protagonists of our own lives; He is.
Why we do what we do, our motive, is more important to the Lord than the act itself. Good works fueled by a selfish desire for recognition are like empty calories; they look like food but offer no real nourishment to the soul.
When we act out of a genuine love for Him and a desire to be obedient, we finally begin to operate in true faith.

Examination Without Condemnation
Second Corinthians 13:5 encourages us to examine ourselves to ensure we are truly “in the faith.” This isn’t meant to be a heavy-handed ritual of self-criticism. Rather, it’s a healthy check-up.
God isn’t looking for an excuse to kick you; He’s looking for an opportunity to cleanse you. Simply repent, let go of the need for human applause, and choose to do things His way. When we love Him first, the “pure heart” follows naturally.
Prayer for Today
Heavenly Father, I thank You that You see the things done in secret. Lord, purify my heart today. Help me to let go of the need for others to see or admire my “goodness.” Let my life be lived for Your glory alone. Search me, O God, and if there is any wrong motive in me, lead me back to a place of simple love and obedience to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
To You
Identify one good thing you are planning to do today. Before you do it, pause and ask yourself: “Would I still do this if I knew for a fact that absolutely no one would ever find out?” Use that answer to recalibrate your heart toward Him.
