Seek God Earnestly – Daily Devotional for February 23
“You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.” – Jeremiah 29:13 (NIV)
The Sacrifice of Seeking
If you feel a need to hear from God, it often requires making room for His voice. Sometimes, this means practicing smalldisciplines: missing a few meals to fast, turning off the television, or staying home to seek Him instead of going out to ask friends for their opinions.
These choices aren’t about legalism; they are proof that you understand the importance of hearing from the Creator. When we trade a temporary comfort, like entertainment or a meal, for time in His presence, we signal to our own hearts that God is our highest priority. We aren’t just “talking” to God; we are making space to truly be with Him.
Beyond Crisis Seeking
Many of us tend to seek God earnestly only when we are in trouble. We treat Him like an emergency room, only visited when something is broken. However, God desires a relationship that is “intense” at all times.
There is a spiritual principle to consider: “Seek Me as if you were desperate all the time, and then you won’t find yourself desperate so often in reality.” We don’t just seek Him to get out of trouble; we seek Him because we cannot live without Him.
More Than Words
Remember that being with God is not limited to your list of requests or your “prayer time.”
Prayer is much more than just talking; it is a posture of the soul. It is the quiet evening spent in His presence, the silent sigh of gratitude, and the decision to listen as much as you speak. By seeking Him with desperation in the calm moments, you prepare your heart to remain steady when the storms inevitably come.

Prayer for Today
Heavenly Father, forgive me for only seeking You when I am in trouble. Today, I want to seek God earnestly with my whole heart. I choose to set aside distractions and my own appetite for the sake of Your presence. Teach me to be “desperate” for You in the good times, so that my soul is anchored when trials come. I desire to simply be with You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
To You
Identify one thing you usually do for entertainment or social connection in the evening. Just for today, “fast” from that activity and spend those thirty minutes alone with God. Don’t feel pressured to say the “right” words, just sit in His presence and listen.
