Guarding your eyes – Prayer for November 6. Praise the Lord everybody! Some say that the eyes are the gateways to our souls. Therefore, we must guard what enters our eye gate, because we must guard against the corruption of our hearts and our souls.
Bible Verse for Today
“I made a covenant with mine eyes; why then should I think upon a maid?” (Job 31:1)
Job had the right idea, we must have an agreement with our eyes. We need our eyes to get around and carryout our activities of daily living. At the same time, we need to guard against the temptations that come into view every day.
Getting caught up in the lust of the eyes is what the media and the world counts on, they call it the “cliff hanger” or “the hook” their goal is to get the world hooked on their “product.” The world says “sex sells” whether it be homo sex, hetero sex, metro sex or extra marital sex. The world also loves the anti-hero, the reprobate, like Walter White from Breaking Bad, Tony Soprano from the Sopranos, both “likable” criminal killers. There’s Olivia Pope from Scandal, Cookie and Luscious Lyons from Empire and Annalise Keating from With How to Get away Murder. All dysfunctional people who have no problem lying, robbing or killing to get their way just to name a few.
These are the people the world wants us to idolize. These are the shows and characters we can’t wait to watch and talk about week after week.
At first sight, it may look that everything is normal, that it is only a film or show. But to say the true, this is the way by which evil gains place and becomes part of our daily life. We don’t notice when we start to tolerate to evil. It’s time we open our spiritual eyes and see what the enemy is trying to do. How do we protect our eye gate? Where do we turn for entertainment?
Jesus is asking us right now to look back to when we first believed. And He’s asking us to go back to that place when He was the “apple” of our eyes and were the “apple” of His. It is now time to make a new covenant with our eyes, not to watch the unclean thing or shows with no redeeming value at all. Guarding your eyes from temptation is important, but in this multimedia age it’s not easy to consecrate your eyes but with God’s help how can we fail? God Bless You All.
Guarding Your Eyes Prayer for Today
Father God, forgive us for allowing our eye gates to be compromised by inappropriate things. Lord, help us to make a new covenant with our eyes and to purge ourselves of those images that can lead us into sin. God, teach us to guard our eyes from temptation. In Jesus name we pray, Amen.
