Jesus is the Bread of Life Daily devotional for May 4

Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.” (John 6:35)

Our inner hunger

Our bodies are so wired that hunger never stops. If a person eats something, at some point they get hungry again and have to eat again. The same is true for other hunger.

Experience teaches us, for example, that if you receive a lot of money, you do not say, “Now I have had enough!”, but you crave more and more money. Man is always looking for more, looking for better. All the things that man craves seem to be like white bread – they don’t satisfy because man always wants more.

Jesus satisfies the soul

The only exception is Jesus. He is not white bread, but the bread of life. Whoever believes in Jesus knows that with Jesus I have everything I need, enough for life, death, and eternal happiness.

He said of himself: “For the bread of God is the bread that comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” (John 6:33)

Jesus is the Bread of Life

These words were misunderstood by the listeners of that time. They replied: “Lord, give us this bread always.”

They thought that Jesus could give them miraculous bread that would never end. They thought that Jesus was now inviting them to the land of milk and honey. They expected that he would now feed them forever; they would no longer have to take care of anything themselves.

This misunderstanding still exists today: people think they don’t have to work or try because Jesus will give them everything they want.

Eat the Bread of Life

This is more than the miraculous bread that the listeners of that time were expecting, it is something quite different.

Whoever eats the Bread of Life will have eternal life.

It is about Jesus coming to us today with his body and blood in the power of the Holy Spirit. This means that in this way he cleanses us from our sins, makes us holy, and gives us faith.

Just let him do it! We can be sure that everything will be all right; in the end, we will receive everything we need, both for time and for eternity. Jesus is not the white bread that leaves us hungry, but He is the bread of life.

Prayer for Today

Jesus, you are the bread of life come down from heaven. I want you to be my daily food for my soul and body. My heart is hungry, and only you can satisfy this hunger. Only in you can my heart rest. Let me be filled with you completely so that I can bring you to my friends and satisfy their hunger too. Give me a firm faith in your loving presence even when I feel abandoned. Thank You for being with me all the days until the end of time. Amen.
