Welcome to your daily devotional for September 30. Today’s lesson is one we all need to hear: “Missing the Moment.”
We are masters of making excuses—we’re too busy, too tired, or maybe “it’s just not our style.” Our excuses always feel legitimate, even persuasive, until we realize, often when it’s too late, that some moments never come our way again.
The Gospel story today shows us how both hatred and pride can cause us to miss a divine moment.

“When his disciples James and John saw it, they said, ‘Lord, do you want us to tell fire to come down from heaven and consume them…?’” – Luke 9:54 (NIV)
The Excuse of Hatred
In His final resolute journey toward Jerusalem, Jesus sent messengers ahead to a Samaritan village. Though He cared deeply for them and was immensely popular, the people refused to receive Him. Why? Because of their ancient, deep-seated prejudice.
They despised the Jews and all things Jerusalem. Their hatred became their excuse, and in that moment, they rejected the Son of God and missed their divine moment.
This stark refusal shows us how readily our own pre-existing biases, grudges, or comfort can become the wall that prevents us from receiving a blessing or a truth that God is bringing our way.
The Fire of Wounded Pride
The disciples James and John, often called “Sons of Thunder,” watched the rejection and reacted with rage.
They wanted to call down fire from heaven, just as Elijah did on Mount Carmel. Elijah was fresh on their minds—they had just seen him in glory with Jesus on the Mount of Transfiguration! They found an Old Testament precedent to justify their anger.
But Jesus would have none of this attitude! James and John missed the point for the very same reason the Samaritans did: pride. The pain of being rejected incensed their pride, giving them the perfect excuse to inflict pain in return, all in the name of Jesus.
They missed the core of His entire ministry: He had not come to destroy but to save.
Missing the Moment
Jesus’s clear rebuke to His disciples reminds us that our mission is never to condemn or seek revenge against those who reject us. The spirit of Christ is one of grace and salvation.

Prayer for Today
Heavenly Father, I confess that my pride is quick to manufacture excuses and seek retaliation when I am rejected. Forgive me for operating in a spirit of destruction instead of salvation. Help me to be so focused on Your saving purpose that I do not miss the moments You give me to show Your grace. Amen.
To You
When opposition, rejection, or discomfort come your way, check the spirit of your reaction. Is your pride manufacturing an excuse to retaliate, or is your heart fixed on the saving, gentle purpose of Christ? The way to make the most of every moment is to abandon the excuses of pride and prejudice and choose to reflect the true spirit of Jesus.
