Today, in our Daily Devotional for May 18, let’s reflect on the importance of following Jesus wholeheartedly without comparing ourselves to others.

Daily Devotional for May 18

“Peter turned and saw that the disciple whom Jesus loved was following them. This was the one who had leaned back against Jesus at the supper and had said, ‘Lord, who is going to betray you?’ When Peter saw him, he asked, ‘Lord, what about him?’ Jesus answered, ‘If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? You must follow me.'” – John 21:20-22 (NIV)

Following Jesus Wholeheartedly

In John 21:20-25, we find a powerful conversation between Peter and Jesus.

After His resurrection, Jesus appears to His disciples and reinstates Peter, giving him the mission to shepherd His flock.

However, Peter, noticing John following them, asks Jesus about John’s future. Jesus redirects Peter’s focus by saying, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? You must follow me.”

This passage teaches us a crucial lesson about focusing on our own journey with Jesus. We can quickly become distracted by what others are doing or how their lives are unfolding. Jesus reminds us that our primary responsibility is to follow Him. Our paths may differ, and God’s plans for each of us are unique.

Avoiding Comparisons

Comparing ourselves to others can lead to feelings of inadequacy or pride, detrimental to our spiritual growth.

When Peter asked about John, Jesus gently but firmly reminded him to concentrate on his own calling. We, too, should avoid comparing our journey with others. Instead, we should focus on our personal relationship with Jesus and trust that He has a perfect plan for each of us.

Our Unique Path

Jesus has a specific purpose for your life. He calls you to follow Him wholeheartedly, embracing the unique path He has set before you. It’s easy to look around and wonder why someone else’s life seems different or more straightforward, but Jesus’ response to Peter is a timeless reminder: what matters most is your commitment to follow Him.

Trust in Jesus and His plan for your life. He knows what is best for you and will guide you according to His will. Stay focused on His calling for you, and don’t let comparisons distract you from your purpose.
