GUARD YOUR MOUTH Prayer for February 4

guard your mouth

Guard your mouth – Prayer for February 4. As Christians, we need to be disciplined in everything we do, including the way we talk. What we speak should be edifying and full of blessing, not just talk for the sake of talking.

Bible Verse for Today

“Whoever guards his mouth preserves his life; he who opens wide his lips comes to ruin.” (Proverbs 13:3)

There is something we believe in, and we talk about it every time. When we limit the way we talk, people assume that we are wise – but anyone who speaks too much might not be considered wise. It is not just a mere saying.

It was written in the Scriptures. Proverbs 17:28 says, “Even a fool is counted wise when he holds his peace; When he shuts his lips, he  is  considered perceptive.”

The Bible has warned us to avoid saying unnecessary words. If there is anything we should guard, it should be our mouths. The Psalmist knew that the power of life and death lies in the tongue and the words he speaks, and he prayed that he learn to stop talking unnecessarily. Psalm 141:3 “Set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth; Keep watch over the door of my lips.”

God is interested in the words of our mouth; we will be judged not only by our actions but by our words, too. It doesn’t matter how spiritual we claim to be; if we find it difficult to refrain from talking too much, we will be exposed to the danger of sin.

There are times when you are about to speak, and people try to avoid you, or someone says it to your face that you talk too much. When you have experienced this, it is time to tell God to help you guard your lips and teach you to speak the right thing at the right time.

The consequence of talking too much is that no one will ever want to listen to you, even when you are serious.

Prayer for Today

Dear Lord, thank you for the grace you have given me to speak. It’s a privilege, Lord. I pray that you teach me to speak the right words and say things that will bless people around me. If there are things that I have said that have caused me to sin, Lord, let your mercy find me and make me clean. Help to start the day with the right words. Amen.
